Early History

In 1883 a local preacher, Mr Joseph Mallard, called at a house in Kingsley in the course of his business which was with sewing machines and found, an earnest woman in distress at the spiritual destitution of the area. She appealed to him to take some action.

A plot of land was bought at the corner of Milton Street costing £353 and registered by the Wesleyan Chapel Committee on April 17th 1885.

A wooden building was erected which was immediately used as a Sunday school beginning with seven scholars. In a very short time numbers multiplied and soon a congregation was gathered for worship.

The need for a bigger and permanent building was soon urgent and the foundation stones were laid on April 15th, 1886.
